The Scientific Quest To Prove Monosexuality Exists

"It’s hard to believe that the majority of our species, in all of our complexities and our cravings for variety, could genuinely experience exclusive attraction to a single gender."

Try proving that for a change, New York Times.

To Google, 'Bisexual' Still Equals Porn

midwestbiactivist:

bialogue-group:

An issue that bisexual activists had with Google seemed to be resolved, but it turns out that’s not the case.

A new petition is making the rounds demanding that search engine Google firmly update its autocomplete function to utilize the word "bisexual," as it does for other words relating to sexual orientation and gender identity, such as "gay," "lesbian," and "transgender."

A Google spokesperson told The Advocate Thursday that search terms often do not show up through the autocomplete function because they may be highly correlated with searches for pornography …

As of Friday, a search for the word "gay" yielded 302 million results, "lesbian" had 155 million results, while "bisexual" had 43.1 million, and "transgender" had 12 million. While Google has explained that the autocomplete function has dropped off for bisexuality because of its high correlation to porn, other words with a high correlation to pornography are still available with the autocomplete function.

Searching "gay porn" will produce 527 million results. A search for "lesbian porn" yielded 69.1 million results, and "transgender porn" yielded 19.2 million (though one could argue those are not necessarily the terms a person would naturally use). Meanwhile, searching for "bisexual porn" came up with 40.1 million results

"One of the biggest issues facing bisexuals is isolation and lack of community,” Jim Larsen of the Bisexual Organizing Project said on the Change.org petition page. "When the #1 search engine in the world makes it harder to find information and a community, it is terribly unfortunate.”

Jim Larsen from the Minneapolis based Bisexual Organizing Project was quoted in a recent Advocate Magazines piece on the need for Google to end their autocomplete ban on the word Bisexual to help alleviate the distress and isolation many bisexual people still suffer from.

DNA microarrays

I spent a good 15 minutes reading two pages on microarrays and this video summed it all up very well.  This is for all the audio/visual learners out there like myself.

Potential of DNA Storage: DNA as an incredibly efficient and compact way to store information

Scientists setting about devising a way to turn the molecules into digital memory: capable of encoding the 1s and 0s used to store words, images, music and video on computers, reports in Nature, by Nick Goldman, Paul Bertone, Siyuan Chen, Christophe Dessimoz, Emily M. LeProust, Botond Sipos & Ewan Birney at the European Bioinformatics Institute in Hinxton.

Digital files store data as strings of 1s and 0s. The Cambridge team’s code turns every block of eight numbers in a digital code into five letters of DNA. For example, the eight digit binary code for the letter “T” becomes TAGAT.

Embryonic chick skeleton

A 13 day chick embryo that has been stained to highlight the skeleton. The blue stain shows cartilage, while the red indicates areas that have started to form bone. The other tissues have been partly dissolved by chemicals to show this more clearly. The row of blue rings in the neck shows the cartilage rings of the trachea (windpipe).

Octopus’ blue blood allows them a broad range of habitats (EurekAlert)

Worldwide colonization by octopods is in their blood! They manage to survive temperature habitats ranging from as low as -1.8°C to more than 30°C due to their ability to keep supplying oxygen to their body tissues. A new study, to be presented at the Society for Experimental Biology meeting on July 5, shows that a blue colored pigment, hemocyanin, in their blood, responsible for oxygen transport, crucially allows octopods to live in freezing temperatures.

Hemocyanin Hexamer - Beta sheets are color coded yellow, alpha helices in red, and the copper atoms in the active sites are blue.

Researchers get close-up view of water pores needed in the eye’s lens (NIH)

Researchers have achieved dynamic, atomic-scale views of a protein needed to maintain the transparency of the lens in the human eye. The work, funded in part by the National Institutes of Health, could lead to new insights and drugs for treating cataract and a variety of other health conditions.

Aquaporin proteins form water channels between cells and are found in many tissues, but aquaporin zero (AQP0) is found only in the mammalian lens, which focuses light onto the retina, at the back of the eye. The lens is primarily made up of unique cells called lens fibers that contain little else besides water and proteins called crystallins. Tight packing of these fibers and of the crystallin proteins within them helps create a uniform medium that allows light to pass through the lens, almost as if it were glass.

This illustration shows two views of a single unit of the aquaporin-0 channel. The left channel is open, allowing the passage of water molecules (red). The right channel is closed because amino acids in its core have flipped inward. Credit: Reichow et al. Nature Structural and Molecular Biology.

Distinct brain disorders, Schizophrenia and Fragile X, biologically linked (Sanger Institute)

A team of researchers have shown that schizophrenia and a disorder associated with autism and learning difficulties share a common biological pathway. This is one of the first times that researchers have uncovered genetic evidence for the underlying causes of schizophrenia.

The team found that a disruption of the gene TOP3B, an exceedingly rare occurrence in most parts of the world, is fairly common in a uniquely genetically distinct founder population from North-eastern Finland. In this population, which has grown in relative isolation for several centuries, the disruption of TOP3B is associated with an increased risk of schizophrenia as well as with impairment in intellectual function and learning.

The frequency of neurodevelopmental disorders in Finland varies by region. This variation corresponds to the migration history of the Finnish population, as exemplified by schizophrenia prevalenceand by the percentage of the population with a disability pension resulting from intellectual disability. Naegleria fowleri

The parasitic organism – which lives in warm bodies of fresh water – has infected 128 people since 1962. Only one has survived. Now, Kali Hardig may well become the second. The twelve-year-0ld Arkansas girl contracted the rare form of parasitic meningitis more than two weeks ago.

The parasitic meningitis—primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM)—is caused by an amoeba called Naegleria fowleri. That microscopic amoeba—part of the class of life called protozoans—is a naturally occurring organism that normally feeds on bacteria and tends to live in the sedimentary layer of warm lakes and ponds.

The feeding structures of the amoeba Naegleria fowleri have a face-like appearance. Image by D.T. John & T.B. Cole, Visuals Unlimited
